생노병사 (生老病死)
아주 옛날 중국의 어느 왕이 인생이 무엇인가 생각하다가 하루는 신하를 시켜서 전국에 있는 학자들을 궁전으로 모이게 하여 인생이 무엇인지 연구하도록 왕명을 내렸다. 그리하여 학자들이 수년 동안 연구한 논문을 준비하여 왕을 찾아와 연구 논문을 왕에게 제출하니 왕이 다시 명을 내리기로 이렇게 많은 논문을 읽을 시간이 없으니 다시 단행본으로 요약하여 제출하도록 하였다. 그 뒤 학자들이 모여서 단행본으로 줄이는데 수년의 세월이 흘려 궁전을 찾아가 왕에게 그 단행본을 제출하니 왕이 이미 쇠퇴할 대로 쇠퇴하여 그 단행본을 읽을 수 없게 되자 그 자리에 모여든 학자들에게 한마디로 요약해서 인생이 무엇인지 말해달라고 요청을 하니 한 학자가 임금에게 다가가 임금의 귀에다 데고 “인생은 生老病死입니다”라고 전했다고 한다.
A long time ago, a Chinese king was thinking about what life was, and one day he ordered a servant to gather scholars from all over the country to the palace to study what life was like. Therefore, the scholars prepared a thesis that they had studied for many years, came to the king, and submitted the research thesis to the king., but the king ordered again that the thesises must be reduced to a book because he could not have time to read all. After that, scholars gathered to reduce it to a book. After many years, scholars visited the palace and presented the book to the king. As the king was already in decline, so that he could not even read it. When asked to tell us what life is, a scholar approached the king and his mouth got to close to the king's ear, saying, "Life is birth, aging, sickness, and death.“
